Baldur’s Gate 3 will add official mod tools this September, making it even easier to play dungeon master
Mods play a crucial role in enhancing the experience of Baldur’s Gate 3, much like butter complements bread, or wheels are to the bottom of trainers for kids. They may not be essential, but their seamless integration makes them feel essential. In the realm of D&D CRPG, mods serve as an extension of the dungeon master’s role, allowing players to customize the world and characters to their liking – often resulting in making everyone in Faerûn even more provocative.
There is a vast selection of Baldur’s Gate 3 mods available to cater to every player’s desire to customize the game’s visuals, gameplay, and more. Some mods even transform the game into an entirely new experience. While these mods have been traditionally created by enthusiastic individuals tinkering with the game’s files, developers at Larian Studios are now opening the doors for official mod support, allowing players to create unique content like a killer salami sword or experiment with their party’s fashion choices.
Official mod support is scheduled to be introduced to Baldur’s Gate 3 in September, providing proper support to enhance stability and compatibility while maintaining a user-friendly experience. Larian assures that their official mod.io platform will not replace existing third-party mods, but rather complement them, offering a smoother and more accessible modding experience.
“We understand and appreciate the hard work and dedication of the modding community, and have no plans to limit modding to our official pipeline,” Larian mentioned in their blog post outlining the forthcoming plans. “We are committed to supporting the modding community as comprehensively as we can, and can’t wait to see what ideas you bring to life!”
The upcoming toolkit will feature a dedicated mod editor, level tester, and in-game mod browser, built on Larian’s development tools to empower creators to manipulate textures and models. Additionally, PC-made mods should be compatible with consoles through the official mod platform.
While the mod tools will be available to everyone later this year, Baldur’s Gate 3’s Patch 7 is currently undergoing testing with a select group of mod makers in a limited alpha test before the full release. In July, the test pool will be expanded with a closed beta, offering 1,000 additional sign-up spots to the public.
Alongside the mod tools, Larian hinted at developing a photo mode, crossplay functionality, and additional fixes in future updates, as well as teasing some “anniversary extravagance” to celebrate a year since the game’s full release in August.
