Cal student makes $100,000 field goal to win Pat McAfee contest
During an exciting Week 6 of “College GameDay,” Pat McAfee ended up giving away more money than he had anticipated.
Located in Berkeley, California, the ESPN show held their weekly field goal challenge where a random fan gets a chance to kick a field goal for a prize — a rare occurrence for someone to succeed.
However, on this occasion, a student walked away $100,00 richer.
Initially, it seemed like McAfee, the former NFL punter, would keep his wallet full once again.
Daniel, an engineering student at Cal, took on the challenge on Saturday morning. Although he had played soccer in high school and kicked a football before, he admitted that a 33-yard attempt was a new challenge for him.
Despite missing the kick wide right for $75,000, Daniel’s kick was better than expected by McAfee and the “GameDay” crew.
There were doubts before the kick due to Daniel’s choice of footwear — unlaced, slip-on Vans sneakers.
However, McAfee decided to give the college sophomore another chance, this time with a $100,000 prize and an additional $100,000 going towards the show’s $500,000 donation for victims of Hurricane Helene.
With higher stakes, Daniel made a successful kick down the center, leading to a celebration with McAfee on the field.
This marked only the second time this year that a fan has made a field goal on College GameDay.
Previously, a Texas A&M student achieved the feat in Week 1 for $50,000.
It was the first time the “College GameDay” set visited Berkeley, ahead of the anticipated matchup between Cal and the Miami Hurricanes at 10:30 p.m. ET.
The schools have not played each other since 2008, with Cal leading the series 2-0.
