Windows 11 No Longer Supports Microsoft’s Windows VR Headsets Following October Update
Microsoft announced last year its decision to end support for its entire Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) platform on Windows. With the release of the Windows 11 2024 Update yesterday, VR headsets using the WMR platform have essentially been rendered unusable.
Launched in 2017, Microsoft initially positioned Windows as a hub for a variety of PC VR headsets, some of which were among the first to feature inside-out tracking. Brands such as Acer, Asus, Dell, Lenovo, HP, and Samsung entered the market with these headsets.
Through the ‘Windows Mixed Reality’ software platform, WMR headset users had access to SteamVR content. However, with the recent update, this support has been discontinued.
“Windows Mixed Reality is deprecated and will be removed in Windows 11, version 24H2,” Microsoft stated in December 2023. “This includes the Mixed Reality Portal app, Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR, and Steam VR Beta.”
If users do not update to version 24H2 of Windows 11 and stay on version 23H2, they can continue playing SteamVR content until November 2026. After that, WMR headsets will no longer receive updates or support from Microsoft.
Although many users of the older WMR headsets may have moved on, the HP Reverb G2, released in 2020, was a notable addition to the platform. It was recognized for its display clarity and enhanced tracking capabilities compared to other WMR headsets.
In addition to discontinuing the WMR platform, Microsoft has also announced the discontinuation of its XR hardware platform, HoloLens 2, which will receive security patches until December 31st, 2027.
Furthermore, Microsoft’s collaboration with Meta includes plans for the Quest to have seamless integration with Windows 11, bringing it closer to the compatibility features offered by Vision Pro for Mac users.
