It’s time for Android phones to embrace Apple’s MagSafe

As a longtime Android enthusiast, I have always preferred Android devices over iPhones. However, I must admit that Apple has hit the mark with its MagSafe system. The convenience and functionality of MagSafe accessories like chargers and mounts are top-notch. So much so, that I even purchased a MagSafe-compatible case for my Galaxy Z6 Fold to take advantage of these accessories.

While MagSafe technology has been around for four years, Android phone manufacturers have been slow to adopt similar systems. The introduction of Qi2, an updated version of the Qi wireless charging interface with a magnetic attachment feature compatible with MagSafe, seemed promising. However, most new Android devices still opt for standard Qi receivers, with even Google omitting Qi2 functionality on its latest Pixel devices.

Currently, the HMD Skyline is the only Android phone that utilizes Qi2, catering to a niche market focused on repairability. Interestingly, the iPhone 15 is also compatible with Qi2, further highlighting the lack of Qi2 implementation in Android devices.

Despite rumors suggesting that upcoming models like the Galaxy S25 series may incorporate Qi2, there is still uncertainty. The Galaxy Ring, while technically Qi2 compliant, does not utilize the magnetic standard. This delay in adopting Qi2 technology raises the question of why Android phone makers have been hesitant to embrace it.

Some manufacturers, like Oppo, are beginning to explore MagSafe compatibility with devices like the Find X8. However, the implementation may not be as seamless as desired, with the need for additional accessories like magnetic rings. This reluctance to fully integrate MagSafe technology into Android devices may stem from concerns about patent conflicts with Apple.

Despite the challenges, it is hopeful that Android users will eventually have access to MagSafe-compatible accessories without the need for add-on cases. The evolution of Qi2 technology and the potential for greater integration with Android devices offer promising prospects for the future.
