Kentucky stuns No. 6 Ole Miss for biggest road win since 1977

On Saturday, Kentucky pulled off a stunning upset by defeating No. 6 Mississippi 20-17 in a thrilling game. The Rebels’ kicker, Micah Davis, missed a crucial 48-yard field goal attempt with 48 seconds left in the fourth quarter, giving the Wildcats their highest-ranked road win since 1977.

The Rebels, who had a seven-game winning streak, were shocked as they were considered double-digit favorites in their SEC opener.

Kentucky took the lead with 2:25 left in the fourth quarter thanks to a fortunate fumble recovery. Backup quarterback Gavin Wimsatt lost the ball near the goal line, but tight end Josh Kattus was there to scoop it up and score.

After criticism for not being aggressive enough in a previous game, Kentucky’s coach Mark Stoops made bold moves in the crucial moments of this game. A 63-yard completion from Brock Vandagriff to Barion Brown on fourth-and-7 was instrumental in the Wildcats’ go-ahead drive.

Brock Vandagriff threw for 243 yards and a touchdown, helping Kentucky control the clock and keep the Rebels’ offense at bay. The Wildcats dominated time of possession, holding the ball for nearly 40 minutes.

Although Jaxson Dart made some impressive plays for Ole Miss, including a crucial fourth-down conversion, a sack in the final drive derailed their hopes of a comeback. Micah Davis missed the potential tying field goal on fourth-and-7, sealing the Wildcats’ victory.

Despite Jaxson Dart’s 261 passing yards, Ole Miss struggled to find the end zone after their opening drive touchdown. The Rebels, who had been averaging 55 points in nonconference games, only managed to score once against the Wildcats.
