Tor Assured Safety As Reports Hint At Authorities Deanonymizing Users

According to a recent investigative report from the German media Panorama, German investigators have been employing a strategy to identify Tor users and deanonymize their identities over Onion services.

Traditionally, the Tor Network is known as one of the most secure layers of the internet, providing users with complete online anonymity. The Tor browser enables access to the dark web, making it a popular choice for individuals seeking privacy, including whistleblowers, journalists, and individuals involved in criminal activities. However, the recent Panorama report raises concerns about the potential vulnerability of Tor users to law enforcement agencies.

The report highlights the use of “Timing” attacks by law enforcement authorities to track users. These attacks do not exploit any vulnerabilities in the Tor browser but focus on monitoring the timing of data packet transmissions. By analyzing the timing of encrypted data packets and correlating them with specific users, authorities can potentially link users to their real IP addresses. As mentioned in the post:

The so-called “timing” analyses record the size of encrypted data packets and attribute them to individual users. Although the content of the communication is not visible, the fact that communication is occurring can be observed.

The report provides detailed information about this new type of attack.

While acknowledging the existence of the attack, the Tor browser refuted any claims of facing imminent threats. In a blog post, Tor stated that they are aware of timing attacks but cannot verify the accuracy of the deanonymizing claims presented in the report. Additionally, since Tor has not been provided with specific details of the attack from the researchers, they cannot confirm or deny the claims of user tracking.

However, Tor clarified that the timing attacks mentioned in the report are not a recent development. Most of the attacks referenced in the report occurred between 2019 and 2021. Substantial enhancements have been made to the Tor network since then to bolster user security. Tor emphasized that carrying out such attacks to deanonymize users today is not as straightforward, unless users are using outdated and vulnerable software.

Therefore, Tor advised all users to ensure their systems are up-to-date with the latest browser versions and security tools to mitigate potential risks.
