New book captures ‘intimate look’ at Terry Fox – National

Barbara Adhiya was surprised when she discovered that Terry Fox had run the distance of a marathon every day during his journey across Canada. While most Canadians knew about Fox’s 1980 mission to raise funds for cancer research through a 4,700-mile run from Newfoundland to British Columbia, they were not aware of Fox’s childhood, the daily challenges of his run, and his close bond with his supporters. Adhiya’s new book, “Hope by Terry Fox,” delves into Fox’s life beyond his Marathon of Hope, using interviews, journal entries, letters, and photographs.

Fox, from Port Coquitlam, B.C., was only 18 when he was diagnosed with bone cancer and had to have his right leg amputated. This personal experience inspired him to embark on the Marathon of Hope to raise money for cancer research. Throughout his cross-country run, Fox gained a massive following and media attention. Adhiya conducted over 50 interviews with people from various stages of Fox’s life to uncover details about his life that were previously unknown to the public.

The interviews revealed aspects of Fox’s character that were not widely known, including his refusal to let anyone accompany him to chemotherapy treatments at 18 years old to spare his family from his pain. The book also includes letters, postcards, and photos that shed light on Fox’s personality beyond his famous run. Excerpts from Fox’s journal during his run showcase his determination and positive attitude in the face of challenges. Despite being in pain, Fox remained optimistic and drew inspiration from his supporters.

Although Fox’s marathon came to an end in Thunder Bay, Ont., in September 1980 due to a lung cancer diagnosis, his legacy lives on through the Terry Fox Foundation, which has raised over $850 million for cancer research. Adhiya believes that Terry’s message of “Anything is possible if you try” resonates deeply and encourages readers to learn from Fox’s perseverance. The annual Terry Fox Run continues to take place across Canada, honoring Fox’s enduring legacy and inspiring others to overcome their own obstacles.
