The Penguin Review: The Best Superhero TV Series in Nearly a Decade
Spin-off TV series of superhero movies are often met with skepticism due to a perceived decline in quality compared to the big screen. However, The Penguin breaks this trend by taking the dark and gritty tone of Matt Reeves’s The Batman and intensifying it.
Oswald Cobb, portrayed by Colin Farrell, is a character who takes center stage in the series. Unlike his comic book counterpart, Cobb is portrayed as a complex character with a thirst for power in Gotham. The show explores his journey to the top, leveraging the city’s resentment towards those in power due to the aftermath of The Riddler’s actions.
Colin Farrell’s portrayal of Oswald is a standout performance, blending moments of delight with despicable acts. The character’s strange charm and unpredictable behavior make him a compelling figure to watch.
The series also introduces other key characters, such as Francis Cobb, played by Deirdre O’Connell, and Victor Aguilar, played by Rhenzy Feliz. These characters add depth to Oswald’s story and challenge his humanity in different ways.
Sofia Falcone, portrayed by Cristin Milioti, emerges as a formidable adversary to Oswald. Her chilling presence and nuanced portrayal add complexity to the series, drawing on elements of horror to flesh out her backstory.
Overall, The Penguin delivers a gripping narrative with a strong ensemble cast that keeps viewers engaged throughout the eight-episode arc. Each character’s arc adds layers to the story, creating a compelling and entertaining viewing experience.
The special effects in The Penguin were top-notch, matching those of a blockbuster film. HBO went all out with explosions, gun fights, and realistic prosthetics on Colin Farrell. Kudos to the make-up team for their groundbreaking work and to Farrell for his seamless performance despite the costume.
The series managed to maintain a gritty tone with its R-rating, offering more swearing and violence than The Batman. The Penguin’s narrative kept viewers engaged, although some questioned why Bruce Wayne didn’t intervene in the chaotic events in Gotham.
Comparable to Netflix’s Daredevil in quality, The Penguin’s captivating story ensures viewers will eagerly anticipate the return of Battinson. The series premieres on HBO and Max in the US on September 19, 2024, and on Sky and Now in the UK on September 20, 2024, with new episodes airing weekly. Please rewrite this sentence.
