Alabama residents kicked out of city council meeting over migrant questions

A recent incident in Alabama saw a city council member removing residents from a meeting in a manner described as “totalitarian” after questions were raised about the arrival of Haitian migrants in the community, as reported by Fox News Digital.

Sylacauga City Council President Tiffany Nix ended the meeting abruptly when attendees inquired about the issue of illegal immigrants, particularly regarding allegations that buses of Haitians had been brought in under the pretense of working, but were seen wandering the streets aimlessly.

The final speaker, David Phillips, was cut off by Nix before he could fully address the council.

Speaking to Fox News Digital, Phillips expressed his view that the council’s actions were not just authoritarian but also totalitarian and un-American.

He emphasized the importance of public servants answering questions from the community they serve, stating that this is the American way and should be upheld in their all-American town.

President Nix defended the presence of migrants in the town, stating that they should be welcomed as contributors to society. She claimed that the council had no information on how the migrants arrived, despite residents mentioning some arriving by bus.

A resident challenged the claim that the migrants were working, pointing out that they were not actively employed as originally intended.

The meeting took a contentious turn when Nix insisted on welcoming all individuals and downplayed concerns raised by residents about the migrants’ lack of employment.

Residents expressed frustration with the council’s handling of the situation, with one remarking on the lack of progress being made in the community.

Phillips criticized the council for treating the migrants as lawful U.S. citizens, leading Nix to abruptly adjourn the meeting.

Residents voiced their discontent with the council’s decision to cut off public comments, with one individual citing it as a violation of public law.

Despite attempts to address the issue, the meeting ended without a resolution, leaving residents feeling unheard and frustrated.

Efforts to reach Nix for further comment were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
