'The Unity Cube' is the Worst VR Game on the Quest Store—on Purpose

The Unity Cube: A Bold Experiment in VR Game Distribution

The Unity Cube is a game that pushes the boundaries of what Meta’s Quest platform allows in its App Lab program. Originally designed as a test of Meta’s hands-off approach to content curation, the game has now made its way to the main Quest store, showcasing the platform’s openness to a wide range of content.

Previously, developers faced challenges in getting their apps onto Quest due to Meta’s strict quality criteria. This led to the creation of App Lab, a more open distribution approach that allowed developers to submit apps without judgment on quality. However, these apps were not featured in the main Quest store, requiring developers to direct users to their app’s page.

To test Meta’s commitment to hands-off curation, developer Tony “SkarredGhost” Vitillo created The Unity Cube, a simple environment with a grey cube that offers minimal interaction. Despite its simplicity, the game was accepted into App Lab, highlighting Meta’s willingness to include a diverse range of content as long as it meets technical requirements and content guidelines.

Over time, developer pressure led Meta to merge the App Lab store with the main Quest store, allowing developers to submit apps of any quality directly to the main store for broader visibility. This move marked a significant shift in Meta’s approach to app distribution on Quest.

Recently, The Unity Cube made its debut on the main Quest store, alongside other former App Lab apps, reaffirming Meta’s commitment to a hands-off curation process. Despite the option to label apps as “Early Access,” the creator of The Unity Cube humorously noted that the game is “perfect as it is” and doesn’t require any further development.
