Google Pixel 9 Review: Initial thoughts
Google’s latest flagship phones are set to hit the shelves tomorrow, and I’ve had the opportunity to test out the Pixel 9 for almost a week.
While I haven’t had enough time to provide a comprehensive review yet, mainly due to the introduction of new software features like Gemini, I do have some initial thoughts on the design, hardware, and more.
For a detailed review, make sure to check out our comprehensive Google Pixel 9 Pro XL review.
Design
Although I’ve always been a fan of Pixel phone designs, I have some mixed feelings this year.
Google has always made sure that Pixel devices have a unique character, from the two-tone backs of earlier models to the controversial camera bar introduced with the Pixel 6.
While I’ve always appreciated Google’s aesthetic of pebble-like shapes and appealing colors, the Pixel 9 series has taken a new direction.
The build quality feels better than ever, but to put it simply, Google has taken an iPhone-inspired approach to design this year.
The flat sides and rounded corners seem straight out of the Apple design playbook, with only the camera bump being a prominent differentiator between the Pixel 9 and the iPhone 15.
While Google hasn’t necessarily made any missteps with the design, it’s a bit disappointing to see most of the Pixel’s unique character fade away in favor of following current trends. Personally, I preferred the older camera bar design that seamlessly blended into the sides, and the glossy back of the Pixel 9 is one of the most slippery surfaces I’ve encountered (the Pro models have a matte back but glossy metal sides).
A case is almost a necessity, and it’s a shame to cover up most of the phone, especially considering the Wintergreen colorway that I’ve been testing – other options include Obsidian, Porcelain, and Peony.
Hardware
Google has often been criticized for lagging behind in hardware with the Pixel phones, although not significantly.
However, the Pixel 9 boasts several upgrades that bring it closer to the standards of a premium device.
One notable improvement is the latest Actua display, which is significantly brighter than before, making it easier to use outdoors. The thinner bezel also gives the Pixel 9 a more premium look.
While it still lacks LPTO technology to reduce the refresh rate to 1Hz, the battery life from the larger 4700mAh cell has been satisfactory so far. This technology is typically reserved for the Pro models.
Additionally, Google has finally upgraded from an optical fingerprint scanner to an ultrasonic one, resulting in improved performance. Facial recognition also works effectively.
Software
Surprisingly, the Pixel 9 series comes with Android 14 out of the box. Google released the series earlier than usual, as Android 15 is not yet ready. However, users will be the first to receive the Android 15 update when it becomes available. Google also guarantees seven years of OS and security updates, mitigating any concerns about the software version.
Despite the early release, there are numerous new features to explore. The standout feature is Google Gemini, driven by AI technology, which offers a wealth of new functionalities to explore and analyze.
However, understanding the full capabilities of Gemini can be challenging, as its functionalities are not clearly defined. Initial experiences with Gemini have been mixed, with some features not functioning as expected.
Google Pixel Screenshots app is another noteworthy addition, allowing users to organize and search for screenshots efficiently, similar to Google Photos.
Price
Notably, the price of the Pixel series has once again increased. The Pixel 9 now starts at £799/$799, marking a significant jump compared to previous models.
With Google positioning itself as a more premium option in the smartphone market, the price hike may deter some potential buyers. Considering the seven-year software support offered for the Pixel 8 range, opting for last year’s model might be a more cost-effective choice for some consumers.
Early Verdict
Overall, my initial impressions of the Pixel 9 are mixed and somewhat perplexing compared to previous Google phones.
While there are welcome hardware upgrades and new software features, the design shift towards an iPhone-like aesthetic and the significant price increase raise some concerns. I’ll be providing a comprehensive review soon, so stay tuned for more insights.
