Dyson WashG1 vs Dyson V15s Detect Submarine: Which to buy?
Dyson now offers two wet vacuum cleaners specifically designed for hard flooring. However, the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine and the Dyson WashG1 are quite different from each other. We have tested both models and can provide expert opinions on their performance, strengths, and weaknesses to help you make the right choice.
For more detailed information on each of these floor cleaners, you can refer to our dedicated reviews of the Dyson V15s Submarine and the Dyson WashG1.

Key reason to buy
WashG1
The WashG1 is a dedicated hard floor cleaner that can vacuum and mop simultaneously, cutting your hard floor cleaning time in half.
V15s Detect Submarine
The V15s Detect Submarine is a high-powered modular vacuum that can clean every part of your home.
What do you get when you buy?
Wash G1
The Wash G1 is a cordless, dedicated wet and dry vacuum designed for sealed, hard flooring. It eliminates the need to vacuum floors separately before mopping, unlike traditional mops or many motorized wet vacuums.
It cannot be used as a carpet cleaner and requires a separate vacuum for carpeted areas, rugs, unsealed floorboards, upholstery, skirting boards, and other surfaces.
In the box, you will receive:
- The WashG1 vacuum body with 1-litre clean and 0.8-litre dirty water tanks
- Metal wand with an LCD display that attaches to the vacuum body
- Charging stand with drip tray
- Charger
It’s a simple yet effective solution for hard flooring cleaning, focusing on a single task.
V15s Detect Submarine
The V15s Detect Submarine is a cordless modular vacuum cleaner. Essentially, it combines the features of the Dyson V15 Detect vacuum cleaner with an additional wet cleaning head, the Submarine.
It’s essential to note that the V15s Submarine parts are not interchangeable with those of the V15 Detect. Therefore, if you already own a V15 Detect, the Submarine head will not be compatible with it.
In the box, you will receive:
- Main vacuum cleaner body with LCD display and a 0.76-litre/0.2-gallon dustbin
- Submarine Wet Roller head and drip tray
- Digital Motorbar cleaner head for carpets
- Fluffy Optic cleaner head for hard floors (with green laser)
- Hair Screw tool
- Crevice tool
- Combination tool
- Wand clip for accessories
- Charger
- Docking station
This comprehensive kit allows you to use the V15s Submarine for all cleaning tasks in your home, including wet vacuuming on sealed hard flooring, regular vacuuming on various surfaces, and cleaning upholstery, curtains, blinds, and shelves.
Price and availability
In the UK, the WashG1 is available from Dyson for £599.99.
On the other hand, the V15s Submarine can be purchased from Dyson, John Lewis, Currys, and other retailers for £799.99.
While both models are not budget-friendly options, the Submarine offers a complete home cleaning solution for an additional £200. In contrast, the WashG1 provides a fast and efficient way to clean hard flooring.
In the US, the Submarine is priced at $949.99 and is available from online retailers like Dyson, Best Buy, and Amazon, which may offer discounts. The WashG1 is not yet available in the US but is expected to launch in September.
Features and specs
Comparing these two Dyson models based on weight or accessories is challenging due to their distinct functionalities.
For instance, although the Submarine weighs 4.1kg, lighter than the WashG1 at 4.9kg, the weight of the WashG1 is less significant. It is motorized, making it highly maneuverable, with its weight supported on the floor. You only need to lift it for transitioning over carpets, rugs, stairs, etc.
Conversely, the V15s Detect Submarine is relatively heavy for a cordless vacuum cleaner, even in its wet cleaning mode.
Wash G1
- Weight: 4.9kg

- Edge cleaning on one side

V15s Detect Submarine
- Weight: 4.9kg
- Runtime: up to 60 mins
- Coverage (in wet cleaning mode): approximately 90sqm
- Swappable battery (one included with vacuum)

- Hair Screw tool for upholstery
Downsides
No product is perfect. Here are some downsides we discovered during our testing of these cleaners.
WashG1
- Cannot steam or sanitize: The WashG1 cannot be used with bleach or very hot water for sanitizing floors. It can be used with a small amount of detergent if necessary.
- Rollers need replacement after 25 hours of cleaning, which can be costly. A replacement set costs £45 from Dyson.
- While edge cleaning is effective, the WashG1 may not reach into corners for thorough cleaning.
- Emptying the dirty water tank is straightforward, while the rollers self-clean. However, manual cleaning of the debris filter is required, which can be unpleasant.
V15s Detect Submarine
- Similar to the Wash G1, it cannot steam or sanitize floors with bleach or very hot water. It can be used with a small amount of detergent if necessary.
- Heavier than many other stick vacuums.
- The drain trench is not sealed, which can lead to leaks when full.
- The trigger mechanism requires constant pressure during use, adding strain to the cleaning process.
Verdict
The Dyson V15s Submarine and the WashG1 cater to different types of homes, offering unique cleaning solutions.
If your home has a mix of carpets and hard flooring or predominantly carpeted areas, the Submarine provides cleaning heads for all surfaces. Check out our Submarine review for more details.
For homes with predominantly hard, sealed flooring and a need for fast and efficient cleaning, the WashG1 is ideal for cutting cleaning time in half. Refer to our WashG1 review for detailed information on its usage.
