The Legend of Zelda film director wants it to be “grounded” so don’t expect a motion captured Tingle
The Legend of Zelda movie director Wes Ball has expressed his intention to create a more “grounded” adaptation of the beloved franchise compared to his initial vision from a decade ago.
Upon hearing Ball’s desire for a “grounded” and “real” approach to the Zelda movie, some concerns arose. How can a series where the protagonist, Link, has taken on various forms like a furry, a painting, and a Deku scrub, be considered grounded? However, delving deeper into Ball’s recent interview with Polygon sheds light on his perspective. Reflecting on a tweet he made over a decade ago proposing a motion-capture Zelda film, Ball now acknowledges that a completely motion-capture project may not be the best choice. Instead, he aims for a more authentic and down-to-earth representation, possibly steering away from excessive CGI and green-screen environments in favor of practical effects.
Ball assures fans that the film’s development team is dedicated to delivering a great final product, albeit under the watchful eye of Nintendo. With experience in motion-capture from his upcoming Apes film, Ball hints at a mix of practical effects and CGI to bring the Zelda universe to life authentically. He also mentions a motion-capture-less version of the film for the physical release, showcasing raw dailies for enthusiasts to enjoy.
As Ball prepares for the release of his Apes film, he reminisces about the Avatar-like experience of working with full CG elements, highlighting the meticulous attention to detail in every aspect of the production. This blend of technology and practicality could set the stage for a unique and immersive Zelda movie experience.
