Troubled fairytale sim Nightingale is getting a Realms Rebuilt update that trades procgen for "handcrafted" story worlds

Baroque wilderness-builder Nightingale has faced some criticism since Ed Thorn labeled the early access version as “a numbers grind disguised as a gaslamp survival game”. Despite initial excitement for the fairytale setting, complete with pop-up Pucks and magic umbrellas, the repetitive nature of the procedurally generated maps has left some players wanting more. However, hopes are high for the upcoming Realms Rebuilt update, which promises handcrafted realms and a more structured story campaign.

The new “Storied Realms” will offer unique themes and challenges within existing biomes, adding depth to the game’s dimensions. These realms will be part of a revised story campaign that takes players on a journey through unexplored territories like Sylvan’s Cradle and Welkin’s Reach.

Players will access these Storied Realms from a new hub realm called Abeyance, featuring ancient portals and new tools like the bow and arrow. This update is a significant advancement for Nightingale, allowing for faster creation of new content while maintaining the core survival gameplay.

Realms Rebuilt is set to launch this summer, bringing a new progression system, Regency tileset, increased structure limits, and gaspunk gadgets. Players will need to start a new character to experience these additions, but existing Respite Realms can be saved for offline exploration. Will this update bring about a transformation similar to Final Fantasy 14? Only time will tell.
