Doom + Doom II remaster has a brand new episode to beat, cross-platform multiplayer & more
QuakeCon 2024 has witnessed the exciting announcement and release of a new remaster of Doom and Doom II. The newly combined release, Doom + Doom II, includes a brand new episode titled Legacy of Rust, developed in collaboration by individuals from id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames.
Doom + Doom II is now available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC – and is also accessible via Game Pass. Owners of Doom or Doom II can enjoy a free upgrade on all these platforms and still access their previously owned versions of the games, as the last remasters were released in 2019.
Doom + Doom II has been remastered by Nightdive Studios using their powerful cross-platform KEX Engine, which has been instrumental in the remastering of classic games like Doom 64, Quake, and Quake II in recent years.
This enhanced version features a newly optimized renderer that supports resolutions up to 4K and 120fps, depending on the platform. Additionally, new accessibility options have been included. Cross-platform Deathmatch and co-op play for up to 16 players are available, with 4-player split-screen support and new rules for level wipes and restarts.
Similar to previous KEX Engine releases, this remaster offers an all-encompassing collection, including:
- DOOM
- DOOM II
- Master Levels for DOOM II
- TNT: Evilution
- The Plutonia Experiment
- No Rest for the Living
- Sigil
- Legacy of Rust (a new episode created in collaboration by individuals from id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames)
- A new Deathmatch map pack featuring 25 new maps
The Deathmatch map pack includes community creations from various talented individuals, adding to the excitement of the game.
This remaster is a significant improvement over the previous versions, addressing issues like frame rate limitations and controversial requirements, providing a smoother gaming experience for players.
QuakeCon 2024 also brought another exciting announcement for Doom fans, with the official mod tools for Doom Eternal now available via a PC mod beta, offering more content for players to enjoy until the release of Doom: The Dark Ages.
