The education MDM platform Mobile Guardian recently disclosed a cyberattack that disrupted its services, leading to the wiping of thousands of connected devices.

Mobile Guardian Platform Taken Offline Due to Cyberattack

Mobile Guardian, a mobile device management tool focused on education, experienced a significant cyberattack earlier this month.

According to the incident report shared by the company, the cyberattack occurred on August 4, 2024, when unauthorized activity was detected on their platform. Immediate actions were taken to contain the attack.

Despite efforts to mitigate the attack, the damage caused the MDM platform to be taken offline, resulting in the remote wiping of thousands of devices. Additionally, numerous students were unenrolled from Mobile Guardian.

The specifics of how the cyberattack occurred are still unclear. However, the company decided to halt services to prevent further unauthorized access and limited user access on devices.

Although the exact number of affected students was not disclosed by Mobile Guardian, they confirmed no evidence of the attackers accessing user data.

Singapore’s Ministry of Education reported that 13,000 devices from 26 secondary schools had been wiped during the incident.

The Ministry announced the removal of the Mobile Guardian Device Management Application from all student devices as a precautionary measure, with efforts in place to restore them for normal usage. Additional measures to regulate device usage for learning support are being considered.

Furthermore, the Ministry assured support for affected students by deploying IT teams and providing learning resources.

While Singapore’s education ministry shared details, the impact on students from other regions remains uncertain.
