Milwaukee wants to build the world’s tallest timber skyscraper (again)

Milwaukee is now home to the tallest timber skyscraper in the world, with plans to build an even taller one. The city recently announced a new project that will feature up to 55 floors constructed mainly from engineered mass timber materials. If successful, the skyscraper will reach nearly 600 feet in height, surpassing the current record-holder, the 25-story Ascent tower completed in 2022.

The project, part of the Marcus Performing Arts Center renovations, will be overseen by Michael Green Architecture (MGA), known for their expertise in modern timber construction methods. The 1.2 million square foot high-rise will include residential units, office space, retail space, hotel rooms, parking spaces, and public walkways and plazas.

The use of mass timber in skyscrapers is a modern approach that offers strength and sustainability. Materials like glulam and cross-laminated timber (CLT) are specifically designed to withstand stress, moisture, and other environmental factors, making them a viable alternative to traditional building materials.

The use of mass timber materials is not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly, offering a lighter and more sustainable option compared to traditional building materials like concrete and steel.

While there are limitations on the height of structures built solely from mass timber, advancements in construction methods continue to push the boundaries. Milwaukee’s ambitious project, if successful, will set a new standard for eco-friendly architecture and showcase the potential of mass timber in high-rise construction.
