Google Pixel 9 Release Date, Price & Specs Rumours
Google is gearing up to launch its next generation of flagship phones, the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro. With an official launch event scheduled in just a few days, leaks and rumors have already given us a glimpse of what to expect from these devices.
Google has confirmed that the Pixel 9 range will be unveiled on August 13, 2024, with the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold all expected to be announced. The Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL are set to be released on August 22, while the Pixel 9 Pro Fold may arrive in September.
Pricing details for the Pixel 9 series have also been leaked, with the Pixel 9 starting at €899, the Pixel 9 Pro starting at €1,099, and the Pixel 9 Pro XL starting at €1,199. Special introductory offers and bonuses are also expected for buyers in France.
As for features, Google has hinted at the presence of AI in the upcoming Pixel 9 series, but specific details are still under wraps. Leaks suggest that there may be three Pixel 9 models, including two Pro variants with different camera setups.
This rumour has gained credibility due to its accurate details about the 2023 Pixel releases, including the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL. Leaked photos of cases from Thinborne support these claims, showing flat sides and rounded corners. The Pixel 9 Pro XL and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold model names have been confirmed, and a leaked promo video highlighted that the Pixel Pro series will be available in two sizes for the first time. The design details of the Pixel 9 Pro XL, such as the smaller 6.5-inch display, centred punch-hole cut-out, and triple camera setup, have also been revealed. Additional leaks and images further confirm the design and features of the Pixel 9 Pro XL. The Google Pixel 9 Pro appears to have a similar design to the one shown in the teaser videos, suggesting that this is the final look of the device. The Pixel 9 Pro XL will come in Charcoal, Porcelain, Hazel, and Rose finishes, according to Android Headlines.
The Pixel 9 Pro is expected to be more compact than the XL model, with flattened sides reminiscent of the iPhone 15. The rear camera module has been redesigned, but it still retains the unmistakable Pixel look. The regular Pixel 9 Pro will feature a 6.1-inch display with a centre punch-hole camera and dimensions measuring 152.8 x 71.9 x 8.5mm (up to 12.0mm with the camera bump included).
In terms of color options, blue and black are showcased in renders, but leaks suggest that Obsidian, Porcelain, Rose, and Hazel will also be available. The Pixel 9 Pro is rumored to feature a color-matched polished metal frame, possibly made of stainless steel.
The Pixel 9, on the other hand, will have a similar design to the Pixel 9 Pro, with a flat metal frame and a new oval design for the camera bar. It is likely to stick with two rear cameras, similar to the Pixel 8.
Leaked images and videos of the Pixel 9 range show different color options and designs for both the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro models. The Pixel 9 is expected to have a 6.03-inch display, while the Pro models will have larger screens. All devices are likely to feature 120Hz OLED displays and be powered by the Tensor G4 chip.
Reports suggest that Google will not be introducing a new chipset for the Pixel 9 series, with all devices expected to use the Tensor G4 based on Samsung Exynos chipsets. The refinement between the G1 and G2 models is expected to continue with the G4 chip, leading up to the release of the Tensor G5 chip on the Pixel 10 series. Additionally, leaked promotional material indicates that the Pixel 9 will come with 12GB of RAM, while the Pixel 9 Pro will boast 16GB of RAM.
The Rozetked team (via Forbes) has unveiled benchmark results for the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL, showing performance improvements of 16%, 31%, and 34% respectively over the Pixel 8 models.
Despite the hardware differences among the three Pixel 9 variants, it is expected that software efficiency will improve by the launch in three to four months.
One ongoing issue with the Pixel series has been the under-display fingerprint sensor, which has been slow and unreliable since its introduction with the Pixel 6.
To address this problem, Google is rumored to switch to an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, specifically Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Gen 2 (QFS4008), for the Pixel 9 series.
The performance enhancements in the Pixel 9 series may support advanced local AI tools, with the Tensor G4 receiving a neural engine update for new features.
Leaked information suggests that the Pixel 9 will feature on-device AI capabilities for various functions without relying on cloud services, setting a trend in the industry.
The leaked promo video showcases Google’s commitment to Pixel Feature Drops for seven years, along with new camera features and AI integration with Gemini AI.
Camera specifications for the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro have been revealed in leaked promo materials, featuring different setups for each model. However, the leak does not mention the Pixel 9 Pro XL.
A recent hands-on video of the Pixel 9 Pro XL (via AndroNews) claims that the setup will be similar to the one mentioned above.
As a reminder, Android Authority previously reported that the Pixel 9 will feature a Samsung GNK 50Mp main camera, a Sony IMX858 50Mp ultrawide camera, and a Samsung 3J1 10.5Mp selfie camera.
The Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL will share the same Samsung GNK 50Mp main camera and Sony IMX858 50Mp ultrawide camera, but will also include a Sony IMX858 50Mp telephoto camera and a Sony IMX858 50Mp selfie camera.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold will have a Sony IMX787 48Mp main camera, a Sony IMX386 12Mp ultrawide camera, a Samsung 3J1 9.5Mp selfie camera, and a Samsung 3K1 10Mp cover selfie camera.
The source also revealed that Google might enable 8K video recording, leveraging the capabilities of the Tensor G3 chipset and the Samsung GNK sensor. The new Pixel 9 models are expected to be more expensive in Europe compared to last year’s flagships. More details are anticipated as the launch date approaches.
Before the launch of the Pixel 8 series, 9to5 Google published a breakdown of some new features that it found in the code of a Google APK, which suggested they might appear in the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. They didn’t, but that could be because Google is perfecting them to launch with the Pixel 9 models. These include Video Unblur and overlay filters for video.
In terms of battery and charging, the Pixel 9 Pro XL is reported to feature a 5,050mAh battery. According to Android Headlines, the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro will claim “up to 55% in about 30 minutes,” while the Pixel 9 Pro XL offers “up to 70% in about 30 minutes” with the upcoming Google 45W USB-C charger. The latest leak reveals a new 45W USB-C charger with significant design changes.
Despite the improved design, the charging cable might have limited reach, potentially restricting its usability. The European version of the charger includes prongs extending from the body, while the US variant is expected to have a smaller form factor with fixed prongs. This new charger aligns with the design aesthetics of the upcoming Pixel phones.
Overall, these leaks suggest that Google is focusing not just on enhancing charging speed but also on improving the overall user experience through better design and practicality.
Arsene Lupin also adds that the charger is likely not to be bundled with the phone.
In terms of connectivity, the Pixel line has faced issues since adopting Tensor chips in 2021, primarily due to using Exynos modems. Despite ongoing improvements, issues persist as reports from Pixel 7 and 8 users surface following a March 2024 update.
According to sources, the upcoming Pixel 9 series is expected to debut the Tensor G4 chipset along with a new Samsung Modem 5400, promising improved speed, efficiency, and stability. Notably, this modem supports 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN), enabling satellite-based communication.
The Samsung Modem 5400 will be featured in all cellular-enabled Tensor G4 devices, including the Pixel 9 series and potentially the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
Additionally, Google is said to be in the early stages of developing a 5G tablet codenamed “clementine,” equipped with the same modem.
In terms of software, it’s anticipated that the Pixel 9 phones will run the latest version of Android, likely Android 14 at launch, with updates to Android 15 expected later on. The Tensor chip’s AI capabilities, such as call screening and photo editing, are expected to be enhanced with potential neural engine upgrades leading up to the Pixel 9’s release. Google’s commitment to providing seven years of OS and security updates for the Pixel 9 phones remains unchanged.
Leaked information also suggests that the Pixel 9 lineup will introduce features like the Gemini AI assistant, Circle to Search, and the ability to search through screenshots. Emergency SOS with crisis alerts, seven years of security and feature updates, and one year of free access to Google’s advanced AI model, Gemini, are also expected to be included.
