The NFL Introduces Facial Authentication Technology in Stadiums
TL;DR: The NFL is implementing facial authentication technology in its stadiums, allowing fans to enter quickly and efficiently. The system recognizes players and staff, enhancing security measures.
The NFL is partnering with Wicket to roll out facial authentication technology in all 32 stadiums for the upcoming season. The system, which was successfully trialed at various venues last year, including Cleveland Browns Stadium, will be operational by the start of the preseason.
The main purpose of the technology is to streamline access for credentialed individuals to restricted areas like the playing field, press box, and locker rooms. By utilizing facial recognition, the NFL aims to prevent the misuse of counterfeit credentials. The Wicket system uses advanced facial recognition software that is both fast and efficient.
Customers will need to link their ticketing account to their facial image through a selfie. Wicket’s artificial intelligence generates a unique digital code representing the user’s facial features, ensuring privacy and security.
Upon arrival at the stadium, registered users can access designated lanes with camera-enabled devices. The system compares their faces to the stored digital code, authorizing tickets for entry. This process takes only two seconds per ticket, with a high accuracy rate, even in low-light conditions.
The Wicket FR system is opt-in, giving users the choice between facial authentication and traditional entry methods. This technology is already being used by teams like the Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons, with positive feedback from fans.
The use of facial recognition technology is expanding in sports, with teams like the New York Mets and soccer leagues worldwide adopting similar systems for enhanced security measures.
