‘Harry Potter’ actress Miriam Margolyes can no longer walk due to spinal condition

Renowned actress Miriam Margolyes, famous for her role in the “Harry Potter” series, has revealed that she is no longer able to walk due to her deteriorating spinal condition.
The 83-year-old Margolyes spoke candidly about her struggle with spinal stenosis, a condition characterized by the narrowing of the spinal canal, in a recent interview with Closer Magazine.
“I can’t walk very well, and I’m registered disabled,” she shared with the outlet, as reported by People. “I use all kinds of assistance. I’ve got two sticks and a walker and they’re such a bore, but I’ve just got a mobility scooter, which is a lot of fun.”
Adding a touch of humor, she said, “It’s like having a new toy. It’s very good for shopping because it’s got a basket on it – and I do enjoy whizzing around on it immensely.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, spinal stenosis can lead to pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, resulting in symptoms such as pain, tingling, numbness, and muscle weakness.
In addition to spinal stenosis, Margolyes has also been diagnosed with osteoporosis and underwent significant heart surgery last year to replace her aortic valve.
Despite her declining health, Margolyes shared with British Vogue in June 2023 that she no longer fears death.
“When you’re young, you never think about death. You just think about your next adventure,” she humorously remarked. “I think about death a lot.”
“You can’t help but be aware that the amount of time ahead is less than the time before you,” she added. “I’m still embracing life. I’m still open to new experiences. I’m just very conscious that there is no light at the end of the tunnel.”
While Margolyes has accepted the concept of death, she expressed concerns about the possibility of running out of financial resources before her time comes.
“I’m worried that I won’t have enough money for caregivers when I eventually become paralyzed or face any other challenges,” she revealed to Radio Times recently.
“I’m saving up so that I can afford to pay individuals to take care of me and my partner,” she continued. “Since we don’t have children, I need to ensure that I’ll receive the care I need in the manner to which I’ve grown accustomed.”
Margolyes has been in a relationship with her partner, Heather Sutherland, since 1968 – two years after she publicly came out as a lesbian.
