Despite the country’s strict travel rules due to COVID, I was still able to enjoy my trip because of my convenient stay at Owl and the Pussycat Hotel. I traveled all the way to Galle, which is a popular spot for tourists in Sri Lanka, to stay in this very instagrammable hotel.

Owl and the Pussycat Hotel is a boutique luxury with 17 unique suites located in the southern coastal town of Thalpe. The lovely owners, Reita Gadkari and Shane Thantirimudalige made sure that the hotel offers elegance on a lovely seaside.

The hotel’s interior is designed by New York architect Uday Dhar, with the property painted in deep pastels and vibrant bohemian hues. This makes the hotel feels like a place that releases a good amount of energy. Not only that but the hotel’s furniture, colourful textiles, and artwork are hand-made by 20 artists from all over the world, including local artisans!

Furthermore, it is named the “Most Instagrammable Hotel” by Small Luxury Hotels due to its colourful and vibrant design! Here, you can also choose from a variety of individually designed and generously sized rooms, and stunning suites overlooking the Indian Ocean. With its ocean-edge pool and buzzing waterfront restaurant and bar, the hotel is particularly well suited for couples’ beach breaks, honeymoons, baby-moons, and romantic getaways.

If you’re curious about its name, it’s inspired by the Poem “The Owl and the Pussycat” written by Edward Lear, which is a really cute poem!

Owl and the Pussycat Hotel has 17 suites that are laid out in 4 different buildings – the Blue, the Beige, the Pink, and the Yellow buildings. Each of these suites offers a comfortable and convenient stay especially for a digital nomad like me! Anywhere you go here, you can rely on their internet. This makes the OTP hotel perfect not only for families or couples on a trip but also for digital nomads or remote workers! Several suites also have open-plan kitchens, perfect for longer stays.

Other facilities to look forward are the restaurants that serve the finest local ingredients and dishes, a swimming pool with sun loungers, and seaside massage and yoga that are available on request.

Before booking at Owl and the Pussycat Hotel, it’s important to note Sri Lanka’s strict entry requirements, including a PCR test upon arrival and a 14-day stay at a Level 1 hotel. This ensures a smooth and safe experience for travelers in the country. You are not truly confined to quarantine as you still have access to all the amenities at the hotel and are permitted to visit approved locations.

Requirements Prior to Boarding
Before your arrival, you must have a confirmed booking at your chosen L1 hotel, which can be arranged directly with the hotel, a travel agency, or an OTA. You are allowed to move within L1 hotels and utilize all hotel facilities. Additionally, you must have COVID-19 local travel insurance coverage for USD 12 per person, with a policy of USD 50,000 for one month.

You will also be required to pay for PCR tests (USD 40 per test) based on the length of your stay. Here’s a breakdown:
– For stays of 5 days or more, you need to pay for 2 PCR tests, upon arrival and departure.
– Stays of less than 5 days do not require an exit PCR test.
– Children under 2 years old are exempt from PCR testing, but if their parents/guardians exhibit symptoms or test positive, the children will need to undergo testing.
– Children aged 2-12 years only need an exit PCR test.

It is essential to have a negative PCR test conducted within 72 hours before boarding your flight. Using public transportation is prohibited during the 14-day period, so airport transfers must be arranged by the Certified Safe & Secure L1 hotel or a Certified Safe & Secure travel agent. Additionally, you must have a completed health declaration form, which can be downloaded here.

Bio Bubble Protocol
In Sri Lanka, there is a Bio Bubble Protocol in place. Under this protocol, you can visit approved tourist sites while adhering to the guidelines. This means you are allowed to leave your L1 hotel.
