Nintendo’s FY24 sees mixed results with sales dip in hardware and software
Nintendo has shared its financial report for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, revealing a decline in hardware and software sales but strong performance for first-party titles at retail.
Hardware sales dropped by 12.6% year-over-year (yoy) to 15.7 million units, while software sales decreased by 6.7% yoy to 199.67 million units. Despite the decrease from the previous fiscal year, sales remain stable for a platform in its eighth year post-launch, with a total of 141.32 million units sold over its lifetime.
During the fiscal period, a total of 31 million-seller titles were recorded, including titles from other software publishers. Standout titles include The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom with 20.61 million units sold, Super Mario Bros. Wonder with 13.44 million units, and Pikmin 4 with 3.48 million units.
The release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in April 2023 had a positive impact on sales of Mario-related titles, resulting in 8.18 million units sold. This boost helped Mario Kart 8 Deluxe achieve over 1.4 million units sold (62 million life-to-date), Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with approximately 560,000 units sold (34.22M ltd), and Super Mario Odyssey with 311,000 units sold (28M ltd) – these are just a few examples.
The digital business experienced a 9.4% yoy sales increase, reaching ¥443.3 billion ($2.9 billion) in full games and add-on content sales.
In the mobile and IP-related business, sales soared by 81.6% yoy to ¥92.7 billion ($600 million), primarily driven by revenue from The Super Mario Bros. Movie during the period.
Overall, despite the decline in hardware and software sales for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, Nintendo reported a 4.4% yoy increase in sales to ¥1.7 trillion ($11 billion) and a 7.8% yoy increase in profit to ¥954.3 billion ($6.2 billion).
Nintendo anticipates a 20% sales decline for the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2025.
Earlier today, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed the development of a Switch successor but cautioned against expecting news on it until later in the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2025.
