4. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

62 California 1, Carmel-By-The-Sea, CA 93923, map

Point Lobos is often referred to as the “crown jewel” of California’s state park system. It is equally stunning as Big Sur, but pleasantly less crowded. This coastal area is part of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, offering great opportunities for tide pooling for both kids and adults.

We explored Weston Beach for tide pooling, where we encountered crabs, anemones, sea urchins, sea stars, and more. It is recommended to check the tide charts and visit during low tide. Additionally, there are numerous hiking trails and scenic vista points to enjoy. We are looking forward to trying out scuba diving on our next visit!

Local Tip: We arrived at 9 a.m. for the lowest tide of the day (-0.3 ft), and most parking lots were small and full except for Weston Beach. Even at 11 a.m. (0.5 ft), people were still engaged in tide pooling activities.

Wear Sturdy Shoes when tide pooling as the rocks can be very slippery. We witnessed a few near accidents and almost had a close call ourselves.
