Why You Shouldn’t Ignore This Dark Method of Motivation
After a long day at work, the last thing you probably want to do is start exercising, work on a side-hustle, or learn a new skill. Most likely, you just want to relax in your house clothes, sit in a comfortable chair, and watch a show on Netflix or browse social media. While this may be the norm, it’s important to realize that these activities won’t necessarily improve your life in any way. It’s time to break free from this cycle of mediocrity and make a change with a simple “attitude adjustment.”
Your motivation needs a boost
Once you finish a task, it’s natural to want to relax. However, just because your body craves rest doesn’t mean your work is done. This ongoing struggle requires a strategic approach to overcome. Otherwise, you’ll continue to fall into the trap of giving in to laziness and instant gratification. To avoid a life of dissatisfaction, it’s essential to address this issue head-on.
“There are no limits to what you can accomplish, except the limits you place on your own thinking.” – Brian Tracy
Reviving motivation with a fresh perspective
Humans tend to gravitate towards routine and comfort as a means of conserving energy. While this trait served our ancestors well, it’s less relevant in modern times. Despite the shift in lifestyle, our inclination towards ease and comfort remains strong. To break free from this cycle, we need to inject some energy into our motivation methods. By prompting our brain to consider the consequences of our actions, we can avoid defaulting to laziness and make more mindful decisions.
1. Upgrade your SMART goals to SMARTS goals
While SMART goals provide clarity and direction, they may lack the necessary motivation. By adding an extra “S” for “stakes,” you introduce a sense of urgency and consequence to your goals. Consider incorporating rewards and consequences to make your goals more compelling and drive action.
2. Tap into your “big why” and your “dark why”
In addition to focusing on positive motivations, it’s crucial to acknowledge and leverage negative emotions. Emotions like jealousy, anger, and even gluttony can be channeled towards productive goals. By embracing the full spectrum of emotions, you can harness their power to fuel your actions and drive success.
3. Surround yourself with inspiration
Identify individuals you aspire not to become and use them as a source of motivation to avoid their traits and behaviors. By associating negative emotions with undesirable actions, you can steer clear of habits that hinder your progress. This method creates a powerful emotional response that motivates you to take positive steps towards your goals.
Ultimately, motivation is about taking action, regardless of the emotions involved. By incorporating these strategies into your routine, you can enhance your motivation and drive towards success. Embrace the challenges and push yourself to achieve more with a renewed sense of purpose.
