Sen. Mark Warner rallying fellow Dems to urge Biden to drop out: report
Senator Mark Warner (D-Va.) is working to gather a group of Democratic senators to urge President Biden to withdraw from the 2024 race, as per a report.
Warner, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, has expressed concerns to his colleagues that the 81-year-old president may lose to former President Donald Trump, 78, in the upcoming November election following his poor performance in the June 27 debate.
The group of senators that Warner, 69, aims to assemble plans to convey their message to Biden at the White House on Monday, as reported by the Washington Post.
One Democratic senator, speaking anonymously to the outlet, expressed concern that the president’s inner circle post-debate is not accurately conveying the extent of damage done to his candidacy by his performance against Trump.
Warner’s office did not respond to The Post’s request for comment.
“Like many others in Washington and across the country, Senator Warner believes these are crucial days for the president’s campaign, and he has communicated this to the White House,” said the senator’s spokeswoman, Rachel Cohen, to the Washington Post.
She declined to confirm or deny that Warner thinks Biden should withdraw from his re-election bid.
There are concerns that if Biden remains in the race, it could negatively impact down-ballot Democrats.
Currently, Democrats hold a 51-49 edge over Republicans in the Senate, but they must defend seats in several competitive races, including Montana, Nevada, and Ohio.
However, no sitting Democratic senator has publicly called for Biden to be replaced on the 2024 ticket.
He has faced calls from three Democratic House lawmakers—Reps. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas), Seth Moulton (D-Mass.), and Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.)—to step aside.
Earlier this week, Reuters reported that up to 25 Democrats in the House are ready to demand that the president end his campaign.
