Zelensky says he’s ready to meet with Trump — as he decries weapons delays
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is open to meeting with Donald Trump if he wins the election, but he is urging Trump to share any plans he may have to end Ukraine’s war with Russia now.
Trump, who is currently leading in the polls for the 2024 race, has claimed that he could resolve the conflict in Eastern Europe even before his inauguration if he wins in November.
Zelensky emphasized the importance of knowing Trump’s strategy to end the war, which started with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, stating that they need to be prepared for any risks to Ukrainian independence.
Zelensky expressed the need for clarity and support from the US, highlighting the importance of understanding the stance of a potential Trump administration on the conflict.
A Trump spokesperson mentioned that resolving the Russia-Ukraine war quickly would be a priority for Trump in his second term, emphasizing the need to restore peace and strengthen American deterrence on the global stage.
Russian officials downplayed Trump’s statements, suggesting that the crisis cannot be resolved in a single day. However, former Trump administration advisers proposed a plan to push for peace negotiations by leveraging aid to Ukraine and Russia.
Zelensky expressed hope that a potential Trump administration would respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territory. He refuted Trump’s claims about Ukraine not winning the war, stating that they are prepared for a counteroffensive pending the arrival of necessary equipment.
In response to the delays, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced a military aid package worth $2.3 billion for Ukraine, including critical defense weapons and munitions.
Zelensky also rejected calls for a cease-fire from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, stating that there is no clear plan for how it would be implemented.
Overall, Zelensky emphasized the need for clarity, support, and timely delivery of aid to address the ongoing conflict with Russia.
