How To Install Google Gemini On Your Phone
Google did not focus on Android or Pixel teasers at this year’s I/O developer conference. Instead, the entire opening keynote was dedicated to its AI efforts, particularly through Google Gemini; the multimodal LLM (large language model) launched in late 2023 and now available to users on various platforms, if in a supported country.
How to get Google Gemini on your phone
If you are in a supported country, Google Gemini can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store. However, the unpaid tier may not be available in certain regions, so a monthly subscription fee of £18.99/$19.99 is required for use.
To download, simply go to the Play Store, search for ‘Google Gemini,’ and tap ‘Install’ next to the relevant result. The app is only 1.46MB in size, so the download will be quick.
How to switch back to the Google Assistant
If you prefer Google Assistant-specific features, the interface, or do not enjoy Gemini on your device, it is easy to switch back. Follow these steps:
- Open the Google Gemini app.
- Tap on your Google account profile icon in the top corner.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap on ‘Digital assistants from Google’ at the bottom of the Gemini settings list.
- Tap on Google Assistant.
- Tap ‘Switch’ on the pop-up prompt.
- You will return to your device’s home screen with Google Assistant reinstated.
How to access Google Gemini on iPhone
Currently, there is no direct way to access Google Gemini within Google’s iOS app if you are not in a supported market. However, you can create a web app shortcut on your home screen:
- Go to gemini.google.com on your iPhone’s web browser.
- Once loaded (and signed in with your Google account), tap the iOS share icon.
- On the share card, scroll to find ‘Add to Home Screen’ and tap it.
- You can customize the shortcut’s name before tapping ‘Add’ in the corner.
- A shortcut to the Google Gemini web app will then appear on your iPhone’s home screen.
It is important to note that the user interaction with Gemini may evolve over time. Google aims to integrate the experience more deeply on Android, and there is a possibility that the Google app on iOS will be replaced with a standalone Gemini app. However, currently, the focus seems to be on expanding AI efforts rather than regulatory compliance.
