The Eternal Cylinder is without doubt the weirdest game I’ve played this year. It’s a game where you play as a sentient trunk hunted by giant mouths and hybrid car people, all while being pursued by an enormous planet-crushing cylinder. It’s a captivating experience, blending incredible art with themes of living among ecological disaster. While not flawless, it’s always captivating.
The main character is a trebhum, a squat alien born into a world slowly being crushed by an unstoppable cylinder across the horizon. The game’s unique concept challenges traditional logic but embraces creativity and imagination.
Your goal is to survive, but The Eternal Cylinder differs from typical survival games. The constant threat of the cylinder forces you to move forward in a linear fashion, with the cylinder destroying everything in its path.
Sanctuaries in Towers provide a temporary safe haven from the cylinder, allowing you to explore and evolve. Mutations can enhance your trebhum’s abilities, offering various advantages such as improved jumping or better insulation.
As you progress, you can recruit other trebhums to join your group, each contributing unique abilities and characteristics. The game’s emergent moments and interactions with trebhum companions add depth and emotion to the gameplay.
Despite some mechanical shortcomings, The Eternal Cylinder excels in storytelling and structure. The narration and events keep the game engaging and unpredictable, while the surreal world design adds to the overall mystique.
The game’s world is a surreal masterpiece, filled with bizarre creatures and captivating landscapes. The looming threat of the Cylinder adds tension and excitement to the gameplay, making it a truly unforgettable experience.
While The Eternal Cylinder may have its flaws, its unique concept and stunning visuals make it a standout experience. The relentless pursuit of the Cylinder will keep you on the edge of your seat, ensuring you won’t forget this game anytime soon.
