Payday 3's latest update adds "solo mode", but it still requires an initial internet connection

Payday 3 was released last year to negative reviews, as it lacked features and was plagued by bugs compared to its predecessor, Payday 2. One major missing feature was the ability to play solo or offline, but an update being released today introduces a “Solo Mode”.

Solo Mode allows players to take on any of Payday 3’s heists alone by hosting the match on their own computer, a feature that was common in older games. However, the solo mode in Payday 3 still requires an initial internet connection to access, as it is currently in beta testing according to Starbreeze.

The implementation of Solo Mode is part of the Boys In Blue update, which includes not only bug fixes and art improvements but also introduces new free and paid items such as weapons and cosmetics.

From its launch, the ‘always online’ requirement of Payday 3 faced criticism due to long server connection times. Starbreeze has been working on addressing issues with the game, including enemy AI, gun mechanics, level design, and progression system, through updates under Operation Medic Bag. However, despite these efforts, sales have been below expectations, leading to a change in studio leadership and predominantly negative Steam reviews.
