Sony Rewards program shutting down by end of 2024
Sony has made the decision to close down their Sony Rewards program by the end of the year, which includes ending their credit card partnership program.
It is important to note that Sony Rewards is distinct from Sony’s other rewards program, PlayStation Stars, where users can exchange digital achievements for rewards, as well as the now-defunct PlayStation Rewards program that it replaced. Launched in 2017, Sony Rewards utilized PlayStation-branded Visa credit cards to allow fans to earn points through purchases, which could then be used towards their Sony or PlayStation accounts.
Sony has officially announced the shutdown of Sony Rewards and their rewards program associated with PlayStation-branded Visa credit cards, effective December 31st of this year. This information has been confirmed through email (obtained by Niche Gamer) and their updated website pages.
At present, the Sony Rewards program is not accepting new members, but existing Sony and PlayStation cardholders will still be able to redeem any accumulated points. However, no new points can be earned through offers or partner programs, and accounts can no longer be linked to Sony Store or Movies Anywhere.
The fate of PlayStation Visa credit card holders following the program’s closure remains uncertain. Comenity Bank, the current manager of the credit program, will reach out to cardholders regarding any changes to the program. Until the shutdown in December, cardholders can continue to use their cards.
It is worth mentioning that Sony’s PlayStation credit card carried a high APR of 27.99% for purchases, and the redemption process was complex throughout the program’s duration – with a switch in credit firms to Comenity at some point. In comparison, Microsoft’s Xbox credit card offered variable rates ranging from 20.99% to 31.99%, depending on the balance. The Xbox credit card and rewards program, operated through Barclays, allows players to redeem points for discounts, Xbox store credit, and more.
