Iran has urged the Group of Seven (G7) to distance itself from past destructive policies, according to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani. This statement comes in response to a recent G7 condemnation of Iran’s nuclear program escalation.
The G7, on June 14, cautioned Iran against progressing its nuclear enrichment activities and expressed readiness to implement new measures if Iran were to transfer ballistic missiles to Russia.
“Any attempt to connect the situation in Ukraine to the bilateral cooperation between Iran and Russia is driven by biased political motives,” remarked Mr. Kanaani, accusing certain countries of making false claims to justify ongoing sanctions against Iran.
The U.N. nuclear watchdog’s Board of Governors recently passed a resolution urging Iran to enhance cooperation with the watchdog and reverse the decision to bar inspectors.
In response, Iran swiftly increased uranium-enriching centrifuges at the Fordow site and initiated the setup of additional centrifuges, as reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Mr. Kanaani emphasized Iran’s commitment to “constructive interaction and technical cooperation” with the IAEA while criticizing the resolution as “politically biased.”
Currently, Iran is enriching uranium up to 60% purity, approaching the 90% weapons grade, and possesses enough material enriched to potentially produce three nuclear weapons if further enriched, according to IAEA assessments.
