Chinese Swimmers Had Previous Positive Tests for Banned Drug
In April, it was revealed that 23 elite Chinese swimmers had tested positive for a banned substance before the last Summer Olympic Games. China and the global antidoping authority defended their decision to allow them to compete in the Games in 2021, claiming the swimmers had not been doping. However, it was later discovered that three of those swimmers had tested positive for a different performance-enhancing drug years earlier but had not been publicly identified or suspended. This has raised concerns about Chinese doping practices and the oversight of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
The three swimmers who tested positive in 2016 and 2017 went on to win gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics and are expected to compete in the upcoming Paris Games. Antidoping experts believe that if the rules had been followed, these athletes could have been disqualified from the Olympics.
WADA confirmed that the swimmers had tested positive for clenbuterol but attributed it to food contamination. The swimmers’ levels of clenbuterol were reported to be very low, but questions remain about why they were not publicly identified for having the substance in their systems.
The Chinese antidoping agency claimed that the swimmers were contaminated with a heart medication unknowingly, citing previous incidents of contamination in other Chinese athletes. However, this explanation has been met with skepticism.
WADA’s handling of the situation has come under scrutiny, with accusations of lack of transparency and independence. Despite the controversy, the Chinese swimmers were allowed to compete in the Olympics, where some of them won medals.
The revelation of hidden positive tests and the possibility of these athletes competing in future Games has shaken the confidence of other Olympians in the antidoping system. The lack of transparency and accountability in dealing with doping cases raises serious concerns about the integrity of international sports.
