YouTube is putting new age restrictions on gun videos

YouTube recently implemented a policy change that will impact gun-related videos on the platform. Specifically, content featuring homemade and automatic firearms will be banned for viewers under 18, while tutorials for removing safety devices will be prohibited for all ages. The new policy is set to take effect on June 18.

According to a disclaimer on YouTube’s firearms policy page, “Starting June 18, 2024, certain content showing how to remove safety devices will be prohibited. Content showing the use of homemade firearms, automatic firearms, and certain firearm accessories will be age restricted.”

In a statement to Engadget, YouTube spokesperson Javier Hernandez explained that these updates are part of the platform’s efforts to align its policies with the current content landscape. The company is expanding restrictions on content involving homemade firearms due to the increased availability of 3D printing technology. YouTube regularly reviews its guidelines in consultation with external experts to ensure that they are appropriately addressing content concerns.

It’s important to note that the new policy will not apply to video games, film clips, or other artistic content. Exceptions may be made for content deemed to be in the public interest, such as military or police footage, news reports, or videos from warzones.

This policy change comes following a report from the Tech Transparency Project (TTP) which criticized YouTube for recommending gun-related content to underage users. The TTP researchers found that the platform’s algorithms were directing young users towards videos featuring weapons and shootings, including instructional content on modifying firearms.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg also raised concerns about YouTube’s handling of gun-related content, particularly tutorials on assembling “ghost guns” using 3D-printed parts. The TTP commended the policy change but emphasized the importance of YouTube actively enforcing these new restrictions to prevent minors from accessing harmful content.
