Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door review: a worthy new version of a must-play classic
Remaking a classic is always a delicate task. Video game development is like alchemy; finding the right combination of elements to create a true classic title is almost a miracle. Even calling it alchemy is not entirely accurate, as the process is more art than science. This is why it’s easy to disrupt the balance with a remake or remaster and suddenly, the classic is no longer the same.
However, when the process succeeds, it’s a delight. Two decades after its original release on the GameCube, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is back – and just as fantastic as it was before. This game remains one of Mario’s best spin-off adventures.
What sets The Thousand Year Door apart from other Paper Mario titles is that it is a true role-playing game. This is the template that the Paper Mario series should follow, especially considering its connection to Super Mario RPG, which also received a remake for the Nintendo Switch.
The Thousand Year Door has its own unique charm, with a mix of surrealism, humor, darkness, and depth that goes beyond its paper-thin characters. Over the course of about thirty hours, Mario embarks on a series of engaging adventures with quirky companions by his side. This game opened up the Mario universe in significant ways, allowing new characters to shine and diverting attention from the series’ core characters.
While newer Paper Mario fans may find familiar elements in this remake, the game’s enduring appeal lies in its charming narrative and engaging RPG gameplay. The game sticks to traditional turn-based combat mechanics without unnecessary gimmicks, providing a refreshing experience for players.
The visual overhaul of the game maintains the original’s essence while enhancing it for modern audiences. The updated soundtrack, with unique battle themes for different areas, adds a new layer of depth to the game. Nintendo has made smart changes and enhancements to the game without compromising its core appeal.
Overall, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door’s Switch remake is a well-deserved tribute to a classic game. It refreshes the original while honoring what made it beloved in the first place. This remake is a smart choice that showcases the timeless appeal of this Mario spin-off.
I am hopeful that this will pave the way for more Paper Mario games in a similar style.
