Valve has officially put the kibosh on this eight-year-old Counter-Strike remake

Classic Offensive, the well-loved community remake of Counter-Strike, has unfortunately come to an end. The team made the announcement on social media, citing Valve’s actions that have prevented them from continuing development on the project.

The project was originally approved seven years ago on Steamworks and has been in progress ever since. Described as a tribute to the original vision of the game, Classic Offensive aimed to re-balance and revive the classic gameplay. Despite being uploaded to Steam for review in October 2024, the project was ultimately rejected in January. When the team tried to move forward with updates on ModDB, Valve issued a Cease and Desist notice.

Valve’s decision was based on concerns that Classic Offensive would violate the terms of the Steam Subscriber Agreement regarding derivative content. This decision has raised eyebrows, especially considering Valve’s history of supporting modding communities. The company has previously allowed modders to monetize their creations and even released the source code for Team Fortress 2.

In light of Valve’s actions, the Classic Offensive team has launched Classic-Offensive.net. The website serves as a documentation of the project’s development timeline, credits all contributors, and showcases the game’s trailer. Supporters of the project have taken up the hashtag #AllowClassicOffensive to advocate for its return.

The team also issued a warning to other modders, urging them to reconsider their relationship with Valve. The situation has sparked concerns about the future of modding within Valve’s ecosystem, as the company has the power to shut down projects without warning, even after following their defined processes.
