I Switched From Android to iPhone After 12 Years: 8 Things I Learned

As a phone reviewer, I primarily focus on Android phones. With the sheer number of new Android handsets released each year, it’s no surprise. However, iPhones are also important at Tech Advisor, even though they have fewer releases per year. When I became Mobile Editor last year, I made it a priority to explore the world of Apple smartphones.
Switching to the iPhone 16 Pro after using Android for so long was a significant change for me. During my two weeks with the device, I gained insights into Apple’s approach to phone hardware and software. If you’re an Android user considering a switch to iPhone, here are 8 things you should know.
WhatsApp woes
Transferring WhatsApp data from Android to iOS can be a headache due to the different backup systems (Google Drive vs. iCloud). The Move to iOS app can help with chat history transfer, but it’s crucial to do it right away. Alternatively, you can use the ‘Linked device’ feature to keep your Android phone as the main device while using the iPhone.
What are all these buttons?
The iPhone 16 Pro’s design and build quality are impressive, with some unique features like extra buttons on the side. The Action Button is handy for various functions, while the Camera Control button may not be as useful. The placement of these buttons can be a bit challenging, especially in landscape mode.
Incredible video
The iPhone 16 Pro excels in video quality, surpassing many Android phones. The footage from the main lens is detailed, with accurate colors and smooth transitions, making it ideal for video enthusiasts.
Fantastic Face ID
Face ID on the iPhone 16 Pro is fast and reliable, outperforming Android rivals in terms of speed and accuracy. It works well in various lighting conditions and can be customized to unlock with glasses or masks.
iMessage is annoyingly good
iMessage on the iPhone is a comprehensive messaging app that integrates SMS, MMS, and iMessages into one platform. It offers features like automatic deletion of verification codes, seamless FaceTime integration, and a wide range of reactions and stickers.
Notification nightmare
iOS’s notification system can be cumbersome compared to Android’s more straightforward approach. Grouping notifications into ‘Stacks’ and the need to access the Notification Center for alerts can be frustrating for some users.
Not much Control Center
The iOS Control Center may take some time to get used to, as tapping icons may not always perform the expected actions. For example, turning off Wi-Fi from the Control Center does not fully disable it, leading to some user frustration.
Painful charging
The iPhone 16 Pro’s charging speed may disappoint users accustomed to faster charging rates on Android devices. With a maximum charging speed of 25W, charging the device can take longer than desired, even with MagSafe magnetic charging.
My verdict on the iPhone in 2025
After using the iPhone 16 Pro, I discovered both positive and negative aspects of the device. While Android is currently a better fit for me as a reviewer, I acknowledge the iPhone’s strengths, especially for users already invested in Apple’s ecosystem. Despite criticisms of lack of innovation, iPhones remain among the top smartphones available today.
