Sea of Stars, already known as one of the top RPGs in recent years, is set to release a new DLC adventure for free next month. Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker will be available as a free upgrade on May 20th for all platforms including PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Throes of the Watchmaker expands on the character of the Watchmaker, whom players encounter in the main story of Sea of Stars. Known as the creator of the Clockwork Castle and the tabletop game Wheels, the Watchmaker has now crafted a miniature clockwork world called Horloge, which is under threat from a cursed carnival. Players must shrink Zale and Valere to navigate this world and defeat the evil within.

Throughout the expansion, Zale and Valere will progress through new classes, skills, and combos. Zale becomes a skilled juggler, while Valere transforms into an acrobat, joining forces with the new playable character, the sharpshooter Artificer.

In addition to new areas, puzzles, and enemies, Throes of the Watchmaker features cinematic cutscenes with a budget equivalent to the main game, enhancing the overall experience.

Furthermore, the soundtrack will include more original songs by guest composer Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger), collaborating with lead composer Eric W. Brown.

As one of the standout indie games of 2023, Sea of Stars has received acclaim for its tribute to classic JRPGs. In a review, Nic praised the game’s passion for JRPGs, engaging visuals, captivating story, and thoughtful level design. However, some areas for improvement were noted, such as deeper combat mechanics and more dynamic gameplay.
