Lakers’ JJ Redick rips refs over no-call on ‘blatant trip’ of Luka Doncic in brutal Game 4 loss

JJ Redick expressed his frustration with the officials following the Lakers’ loss to the Timberwolves, putting them on the verge of elimination in the first round.
Although the Lakers squandered a fourth-quarter lead in the 116-113 loss at Target Center, Redick was particularly displeased with the officiating, highlighting a non-call involving Luka Doncic.
The incident in question occurred in the fourth quarter when Doncic seemed to be tripped but no foul was called.
“Luka got tripped. That was a blatant trip. He doesn’t just fall on his own. We watched and he gets tripped. We should have been at the free-throw line, that’s not an excuse for why we lost, but he got fouled,” Redick said.
Doncic was trying to bring the ball over the half-court line when he either tripped or stepped on Timberwolves forward Jaden McDaniels’ foot, causing him to lose his balance.
Anthony Edwards played a key role in the Timberwolves’ victory on Sunday, scoring 43 points on 12-of-23 shooting, along with nine rebounds, six assists, and one block.
The Lakers’ precarious position has led to criticism of Redick, including from Lakers legend Magic Johnson, who questioned the heavy usage of LeBron James and Doncic in the second half.
“I don’t know if it’s smart to play LeBron [James] and Luka [Doncic] the entire second half after only one day of rest between Games 3 and 4,” Johnson posted on X on Sunday. “When we needed LeBron to take over in the fourth quarter, he couldn’t—he scored 0 points in the fourth.”
He also added: “I’m just sick to my stomach that the Lakers lost this game after being in control most of the 2nd half.”
The Lakers’ season hangs in the balance as they face Game 5 at Crypto.com Arena on Wednesday.
