Car Plows Into Vancouver Festival, Killing People

A tragic incident took place at a Filipino street festival in Vancouver, British Columbia, where a driver plowed into a group of partygoers, resulting in the death of at least nine people, as confirmed by local authorities.

Vancouver police described the event as a “mass casualty incident” at a neighborhood block party. The driver, a 30-year-old Vancouver man, was taken into custody as the lone suspect at the scene.

Although terrorism was ruled out as a motive by investigators, details regarding the incident remain undisclosed. Photos of the scene showed a black SUV with front-end damage and deployed airbags.

The Vancouver police shared on social media that the tragic event occurred during the Lapu Lapu Day Festival near East 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street, honoring a national hero in the Philippines.

Confirming the loss of nine lives, Vancouver police expressed condolences to those affected by the incident at the Lapu Lapu Festival. Interim police chief Steve Rai did not comment on the motive but mentioned that the driver was known to law enforcement. Members of the crowd subdued the driver before police arrived.

The incident occurred shortly before federal elections in Canada, but authorities have not linked it to the upcoming vote. Despite the tragedy, a scheduled 10-kilometer run with thousands of participants is allowed to proceed as the police believe the attack was an isolated incident.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. of the Philippines also extended his sympathies to the families of the victims, emphasizing the bond between the two nations. Vancouver’s diverse community is deeply affected by the tragic incident, highlighting the city’s multicultural identity.
