Ghost of Yōtei is scheduled to launch for PS5 on 2nd October 2025, with Sucker Punch bringing the highly anticipated sequel to Ghost of Tsushima five years after their PS4 samurai epic.

Ghost of Yōtei takes a different approach by not being a direct sequel to Jin Sakai’s story. Instead, it jumps forward a couple of hundred years and shifts to a new location in the Ezo region (modern-day Hokkaido) around Mount Yôtei in the year 1603. The game’s trailers showcase a Western vibe in some of the scenery and imagery.

The game introduces a new protagonist, Atsu, whose story revolves around seeking revenge. After her family is killed by a gang of outlaws known as the Yōtei Six, Atsu survives and spends the next sixteen years honing her skills in combat. Now, she embarks on a mission to track down and seek vengeance on The Snake, The Oni, The Kitsune, The Spider, The Dragon, and Lord Saito.

However, Sucker Punch emphasizes that the game is not solely about revenge. Through Atsu’s journey, she will form new alliances, connect with the people and the land, and discover a new sense of purpose beyond her quest for vengeance.

Pre-orders for Ghost of Yōtei will begin on 2nd May, with a standard price of £69.99 / $69.99 / €79.99. Deluxe and collector’s editions are also available for interested players to explore on the PS Blog.

Ghost of Tsushima was a critical success for PlayStation, adding to its lineup of prestigious AAA titles at the end of the last generation. Despite initial concerns about its niche homage to samurai cinema, the game surpassed expectations and became a must-have exclusive on the PS4. With subsequent releases on PS5, including the Iki Island DLC and multiplayer expansion, Ghost of Tsushima has solidified its status as a standout title.

Reflecting on the original Ghost of Tsushima review, Aran noted, “Ghost of Tsushima is an artistic triumph, capturing a real cinematic feel through its visuals, immersive world, and soundtrack. However, Jin’s journey is sometimes overshadowed by secondary characters and smaller, more personal stories found in the side quests. While the game showcases style, there are moments where substance takes a back seat.”
