The Elders Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remaster has been announced… and it’s out today!

The highly anticipated The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion remaster has finally been unveiled, and it is available today for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with ‘day one’ availability on Xbox Game Pass as well.
What are our thoughts on this news? While Skyrim remains the most popular and best-selling game in the RPG series, there are many fans who have a special place in their hearts for Morrowind or Oblivion. These earlier titles are prime candidates for a visual upgrade, and Oblivion has received just that. The game now features a more modern game engine, with enhanced graphics, lighting effects, and detailed environments.
The graphical overhaul utilizes Unreal Engine 5, while still retaining elements of the original Oblivion engine. Virtuos has painstakingly recreated every asset, introduced a new lighting engine, adjusted gameplay mechanics, updated the UI and UX, and implemented a new leveling system inspired by both Oblivion and Skyrim. Third-person view has been revamped, sprinting has been added, and each race now has distinct audio. Mini-games like lock picking remain unchanged, but with improved graphics.
Players can choose between the standard edition and the deluxe edition of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. The deluxe edition includes extra weapons and horse armor, a nostalgic nod to the original game’s infamous DLC. The standard edition includes all expansions, including The Shivering Isles.
The development of the game involved collaboration between Bethesda Dallas, Bethesda Rockville, and Virtuos. Unfortunately, Virtuos was the source of a recent leak, with Oblivion remake images surfacing online. Despite this, Virtuos has a strong reputation in the industry, having worked on various major projects and remasters.
As the release of Oblivion draws near, fans are eager to see how the remaster compares to the original and how it has evolved under Virtuos’ expertise.
