Mumbai airport announces six-hour runway closure for safety checks, BA

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has announced plans to undertake its scheduled pre-monsoon runway maintenance on 8 May 2025. Both the primary (09/27) and secondary (14/32) runways will remain temporarily non-operational from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm while essential inspections and surface checks are carried out.

The airport issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) six months in advance, ensuring airlines and operational partners had sufficient time to plan flight adjustments and minimise inconvenience for passengers. The maintenance programme focuses on checking runway surfaces for wear and tear, addressing potential waterlogging risks and securing airside infrastructure against seasonal weather disruptions.

“The pre-monsoon maintenance is part of our commitment to deliver safe and seamless travel experiences by maintaining world-class infrastructure standards,” a CSMIA spokesperson noted. The inspections form part of the airport’s broader preparedness strategy, which includes the use of advanced monitoring systems to manage repairs efficiently within the six-hour maintenance window.

CSMIA’s 1,033-acre airside area will undergo targeted inspections to ensure safe landings and departures throughout the monsoon season. The airport has also coordinated closely with airlines, ground handlers, and regulatory authorities to ensure a smooth transition before and after the maintenance window.
