Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, is gradually enhancing its Grok chatbot to compete with top rivals like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

On Wednesday night, xAI introduced a new “memory” feature for Grok that allows the bot to retain information from previous conversations. This means that Grok can now provide more personalized responses when asked for recommendations, provided that users have interacted with it enough for it to learn their preferences.

ChatGPT and Gemini also have similar memory features, with ChatGPT recently upgrading to reference a user’s entire chat history. Gemini utilizes persistent memory to customize its responses for individual users as well.

According to a post from the official Grok account on X, “Memories are transparent, you can see exactly what Grok knows and choose what to forget.”

The new memory feature on Grok is currently in beta on Grok.com and the Grok iOS and Android apps, excluding users in the EU or U.K. Users can toggle this feature off from the Data Controls page in the settings menu, and delete individual memories by tapping the icon below the memory in the Grok chat interface on the web (and soon on Android).

xAI is actively working on implementing the memory feature into the Grok experience on X.
