Honor’s using AI to make your smartphone photos even better… and bigger

Honor has recently unveiled a series of AI-powered updates in collaboration with Google Cloud. The key features include AI Outpainting, an AI eraser, and a sneak peek at the upcoming product line set to launch next month.
Among the announcements, AI Outpainting stands out as a major innovation. This tool, similar to Photoshop’s Generative Expand, simplifies the process of framing photos accurately by using AI to fill in any missing areas.
While details about Outpainting are limited, here’s what we do know. AI Outpainting is part of Honor’s AiMAGE suite and utilizes Google’s Imagen model. It allows users to zoom out and expand their photos up to twice the original size, as well as reframe and rotate images without losing any content, as AI fills in the gaps seamlessly.
Eric Fang from Honor commented on AI Outpainting, stating, “It’s a game-changer that enables users to focus on capturing the decisive moment without worrying about perfect framing. The optimized generative fill ensures seamless integration of expanded images, even in complex scenes like buildings and landscapes.”
AI Eraser is another key tool in Honor’s new AI-powered lineup. This tool, seen in top smartphones before, allows users to remove unwanted objects by circling or tapping on them, with Honor’s AI seamlessly filling in the removed area.
Honor has also hinted at its upcoming products focusing more on AI, thanks to the collaboration with Google Cloud. The new lineup, scheduled for release in May 2025, will utilize Google Veo, Google’s video generation tool. While the specifics of this partnership are unclear, Honor promises that it will enable user commands to generate videos that align with their creative vision.
