RLWRLD raises $14.8M to build a foundational model for robotics

The adoption of robotics in industries has increased significantly as more robots are being used to automate repetitive tasks. In 2023, over 540,000 new industrial robots were installed globally, bringing the total number of active industrial robots to over 4 million, according to IFR.
While industrial robots are proficient at repetitive tasks, they struggle with precision, delicate materials, and adapting to changing conditions. This limitation is why many industrial processes still rely on manual labor.
To address this challenge, South Korean startup RLWRLD has developed an AI model specifically for robotics by combining large language models with traditional robotics software. This model aims to enable robots to make agile movements and engage in logical reasoning.
RLWRLD recently emerged from stealth mode with $14.8 million in seed funding led by Hashed, with investments from Mirae Asset Venture Investment, Global Brain, and several strategic investors from Japan, Korea, and India.
The seed funding will support proof-of-concept projects, infrastructure development, robot acquisition, data collection, and talent recruitment. RLWRLD plans to focus on developing advanced hand movements, such as five-finger capabilities not yet demonstrated by competitors like Tesla and Figure AI.
RLWRLD is collaborating with strategic investors to automate human-centric workflows using its AI model and is preparing a demonstration of humanoid-based autonomous actions. The company aims to develop a platform supporting various types of robots for different applications.
Founded in 2024, RLWRLD is led by Jung-Hee Ryu, who previously founded Olaworks and a startup accelerator, Future Play. Inspired by the growth of AI startups in other regions, Ryu saw an opportunity to prioritize robotics foundation models in Korea and Japan’s manufacturing sectors.
RLWRLD faces competition from other startups and larger firms like Tesla and Nvidia, but Ryu believes the company’s expertise in AI and robotics positions it well for success. The startup aims to generate revenue through collaborations and demonstrations with strategic partners.
With a focus on industrial automation, RLWRLD’s long-term goal is to provide solutions for factories, logistics centers, retail stores, and domestic environments. The startup currently employs 13 individuals.
