Roof collapse at Dominican club kills at least 113 as officials scramble to identify victims

The iconic Jet Set club in Santo Domingo was filled with musicians, athletes, and officials when dust started falling from the ceiling, leading to a tragic event.

Shortly after, the roof collapsed entirely, resulting in the deaths of over 113 people and leaving many trapped on the dance floor where a merengue concert was taking place. More than 255 individuals sustained injuries in the incident.

Among the casualties was renowned merengue artist Rubby Pérez, who was performing at the time of the tragedy. Search and rescue operations continued for over 24 hours as crews worked tirelessly to locate survivors.

International assistance from Puerto Rico and Israel was sought to aid in the search efforts. The devastating event also claimed the lives of several prominent individuals, including MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel and Dominican player Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera.

The aftermath of the collapse left many families searching for their loved ones, with only a fraction of the victims identified so far. The community mourned the loss of various professionals and public figures, further highlighting the magnitude of the disaster.

The cause of the roof collapse remained unknown, prompting investigations into the safety protocols and maintenance of the Jet Set club. Authorities and local officials collaborated to determine the factors leading to the tragic incident.
