Billion-dollar tech firm stands by disgraced CEO exposed for frequenting high-end brothel in Boston
The CEO of a Top Wastewater Treatment Firm Allegedly Involved in Prostitution Sting
The CEO of a top wastewater treatment firm allegedly paid for sex at high-end brothels, leading to his arrest in early 2025. Despite the controversy, the company has defended him while emphasizing their commitment to excellence.
Gradient, a clean water startup, issued a firm but perplexing defense for Chief Executive Anurag Bajpayee following his arrest during a prostitution sting.
Bajpayee and dozens of other men were arrested in the Boston area on misdemeanor charges related to paying for sex and a “girlfriend experience” with women primarily of Asian descent who were victims of sex trafficking.
Gradient has expressed trust in the judicial process and their company’s mission despite the ongoing legal proceedings.
“We believe in the justice system and are confident that this will resolve favorably in due course. Unrelated to this, Gradient will continue to pursue excellence in technological innovation and to strive towards our mission to ensure clean water for all society,” the company stated.
Prior to the scandal, Bajpayee was recognized for his leadership in water treatment technology and was featured in Scientific American’s Top 10 World-Changing Ideas list.
While Gradient stands by Bajpayee, others arrested in the prostitution sting, including Cambridge City Councilor Paul Toner, face public scrutiny and calls for resignation.
“I caused pain for the people I care about most. For that, I will be forever sorry. This is an ongoing legal matter, and I will not have further comment at this time,” Toner expressed in an apology to his loved ones.
Prosecutors revealed that the brothel catered to a clientele of “rich and powerful” individuals, offering monthly memberships to frequent visitors. The ring operated from luxury apartments in Cambridge and Watertown, Mass., as well as Washington, D.C. suburbs.
