Lanterns - Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler

The superhero crime series called Lanterns is in development at Max as part of the rebooted DC film universe. The show is being led by showrunner Chris Mundy, along with writers Damon Lindelof and Tom King. The series will focus on the Green Lantern superheroes, including Hal Jordan and John Stewart. The show is expected to premiere in early 2026, with Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre starring in the lead roles. Other cast members include Kelly McDonald, Garret Dillahunt, and Nathan Fillion. The plot will follow new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. After the blockbuster success of neo-noir film The Penguin, Warner Bros. is now considering another dark and realistic tale to follow suit. Drawing inspiration from the gritty and down-to-earth approach of Marvel’s Daredevil and Punisher, the studio aims to captivate audiences with a similar tone.

The creators of the upcoming series, Lanterns, have revealed their influences go beyond True Detective, including a touch of the British spy series Slow Horses. DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran praised the talented team behind the show, highlighting the exceptional performances from actors like Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler, as well as director James Hawes.

This new approach seeks to distance Lanterns from the ill-fated 2011 Green Lantern movie, known for its poor CGI and reception. Showrunner Chris Mundy emphasized the series’ appeal to both die-hard comic book fans and newcomers to the Green Lantern lore, promising a deep exploration of the characters on and off duty.
