OpenAI plans to release a new ‘open’ language model in the coming months

OpenAI has announced plans to release a new “open” language model, the first since GPT-2, in the coming months. The company is seeking feedback from developers, researchers, and the broader community through a feedback form on its website.

OpenAI aims to collaborate with the community to make the model as useful as possible. Developer events will be held in various regions to gather feedback and showcase prototypes of the model.

Competition from “open” approach adopters like DeepSeek is putting pressure on OpenAI. These competitors make their models available for experimentation and commercialization, leading to significant success in some cases.

OpenAI’s CEO, Altman, expressed the need for a different open-source strategy. The upcoming open model will have “reasoning” capabilities similar to o3-mini, and will undergo evaluation before release to ensure readiness for modification post-release.
