A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the city of Bangkok, Thailand on Friday (March 28, 2025), causing buildings to sway.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey and Germany’s GFZ center for geosciences, the earthquake was shallow, with a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), and had its epicenter in neighboring Myanmar. The greater Bangkok area is home to over 17 million people, many of whom reside in high-rise buildings.

As alarms sounded in buildings at around 1:30 pm, residents were quickly evacuated down staircases of tall condominiums and hotels in central Bangkok. Despite the initial panic, there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The tremor was strong enough to cause water to spill out of pools, even those located on high floors of buildings. The epicenter of the earthquake was situated in central Myanmar, approximately 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of the city of Monywa. The impact of the earthquake in Myanmar, which is currently experiencing a civil war, remains unknown at this time.
